Introduction
Hilltop Barbershop is a small family owned and run business located in Acushnet, Massachusetts. It was established in 2002 and is now operated by Donald Dufresne, the youngest of several generations of barbers. They specialize in classic, professional looking cuts for men of all ages (you won’t find any TikTok fad cuts here…and that’s the way they like it).
Since they opened twenty-one years ago, they had only a sign and barber pole (no logo), until they approached me to design one for them in late January, 2023. They wanted something simple and timeless–something that resonated with their customer-base and attracted new, like-minded patrons. I was happy to tackle this task and provide them with a fresh new look.

Mechanics
Right off the bat, I knew this would need to be a logotype, providing them with the classic, timeless feel they were looking for. In addition, I hoped I could find a typeface that could provide the subtle, clever illusion of a hilltop shape.
Of course, with such a specific ask, I knew I’d have to spend a significant amount of time sifting through typefaces in order to find just the right one and that didn’t even account for the time spend searching for its perfect mate.
Typefaces
When it comes to pairing typefaces, they need to form a healthy relationship…each with qualities reminiscent of the other, while upholding their uniqueness. If they’re too different, they’ll clash…too similar and together they’re boring.
